Well-aligned teeth can be not only a confidence booster with a beautiful smile but also major improvement in the health of your teeth over time.  Invisalign, available to Edmonton residents from Newbury Dental, is an excellent alternative to traditional braces.

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that can cost between $2,000 and $10,000 in Canada depending on the complexity of your alignment needs. The treatment might be covered by certain insurance plans, and is a worthy investment for many people with teeth alignment issues.

Here’s what you need to know about Invisalign costs in Edmonton, AB.

Invisalign Aligners as an Orthodontic Treatment

Misaligned teeth, or malocclusion, is a fairly common orthodontic issue. Though most people will at first only consider the cosmetic issues this poses – crooked teeth can lead to low confidence – there are also significant structural issues to having crooked teeth. Misaligned teeth can be more difficult to keep clean, which may lead to tooth decay and gum disease, and may suffer from accelerated wear because the teeth are not in the ideal position.

The treatment for malocclusion is one of a number of corrective systems used by dentists; one of the most popular is the Invisalign clear aligner system.

Invisalign aligners are a series of clear plastic aligner trays used to gradually straighten a patients teeth. This treatment generally lasts less than two years and can, in some cases, be completed in only six months.

The treatment was created by Align Technology, whose goal is to help transform their customers’ smiles so that they can be confident enough to take on life’s challenges. Their system is based on engineered, 3D printed, and customized trays.

How a treatment plan with Invisalign works

In general, Invisalign clear aligners work for adults and teens by slowly guiding your teeth to shift and gradually match the pattern of the tray. Using  trays consistently, patients can improve their oral health and correct teeth alignment problems over time.

Treatment with Invisalign takes three major steps.

1.       Your dentist will perform an exam and a thorough evaluation of your teeth to see if you are a good candidate for treatment. At Newbury Dental, we take a 3D scan of your mouth to create your custom set of aligners.

2.       Once your aligners are ordered and arrive, you will start wearing your aligners. You must wear the aligner tray for between 20 and 22 hours per day, and each aligner tray for one to two weeks at a time.

3.       You will visit your dentist regularly so that they can monitor your smile for progress and advise you on when to switch to the next aligner tray.

Once your teeth are in the proper alignment, your provider will let you know that you can stop wearing your trays. After your treatment, you can maintain your smile by wearing a retainer – another kind of custom alignment tray – at night.

Invisalign treatment versus traditional braces

The most common treatment option for a misaligned smile before the invention of clear aligner systems was wearing traditional braces. This system of metal wires and rubber bands was permanently affixed to your teeth and manually pulled into place via frequent adjustments done by your orthodontist.

Invisalign clear aligner trays differ from metal braces in a few major ways.

Firstly, they are less conspicuous, being virtually invisible rather than made of metal and requiring elastic bands. Though for some, choosing colors for their bands was fun, some people find braces to be unsightly and embarrassing. Invisalign makes taking photos where you smile easier and can help improve confidence during treatment.

Secondly, in contrast to metal braces, Invisalign trays are removable, meaning that your diet isn’t restricted and your oral hygiene routine can remain largely unchanged. Additionally, if there is an issue with your tray, you can remove it and call your doctor rather than needing an emergency appointment for broken wires.

Thirdly, while traditional braces can take multiple years and multiple adjustment by a professional to work, aligner trays are very effect in treating simple orthodontic problems in a more subtle way for faster results. This means that you will experience less aching and general discomfort than you would with traditional braces.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost in Alberta?

The cost of your treatment plan may vary depending on the amount of correction needed, the length of your plan, and the amount covered by your insurance, among other factors.

If your smile correction needs are more complex, your treatment will take longer. This means more monitoring and more alignment trays, so the cost of the Invisalign treatment increases.

Generally, though, Invisalign treatment costs between $2,000 and $8,000 in Edmonton. The Invisalign website lists the costs as between $3,000 and $7,000, though this is measured in American dollars.

Is Invisalign Worth the Cost?

Whether or not Invisalign treatment is worth the money it costs is a highly personal question based on many factors. If you want or need straighter teeth, Invisalign is an excellent option and can be quick and effective, letting you get back to your regular routine more easily.

At the same time, Invisalign may cost roughly the same as traditional braces and, in many cases, can be just as effective. Not all patients enjoy Invisalign; you may find that traditional braces are a more cost-effective option for you, so you may choose to go with that treatment.

Still, Invisalign clear aligners are a more comfortable, discrete, and adaptable solution to misaligned teeth and malocclusion than traditional braces, so many patients find that it’s worth the cost to get Invisalign treatment.

Is Invisalign covered by insurance in Canada?

Generally, Invisalign treatment is covered by dental insurance plans in Edmonton as well as across Canada. The specific amount may vary, though many plans cover orthodontic treatment at around 50%, while some more comprehensive plans may cover orthodontic treatment completely. Contact your insurance provider for more information.

If you are working with a group dental plan from your place of work, you may see slightly less coverage of orthodontic procedures. It’s less common in these plans, but definitely doable, especially if you work for a larger company with more resources available for its employees. Check your plan documents for details, or ask your human resources department for more information.

You may also choose to use a health spending account, or HSA, to help cover the cost of your plan. HSAs are common among self-employed individuals and small businesses. HSAs allow you to set money aside for medical expenses that can then be used as a tax-exemption.

Without insurance, you may be able to pay for your Invisalign treatment using a payment plan, paying a small amount monthly to break the expense into more manageable chunks. At Newbury Dental, we are happy to offer multiple payment options and plans, including financing from Lendcare.
